November is National Diabetes Month which makes it the perfect time to explore some new ideas for flavorful, diabetes-friendly diet options.

Did you know that the American Diabetes Association identifies berries, including strawberries, as one of the top ten superfoods for a diabetes meal plan since they are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and dietary fiber?

California strawberries can be a perfect part of a diabetes meal plan as they are naturally low in sugar with only 7 grams per serving (about 8 strawberries, or 1 cup), and are an excellent source of vitamin C with more vitamin C than an orange! A serving of California Strawberries is only 45 calories and also full of fiber so it’s also a great option for anyone trying to manage their weight.

Here are 5 ways to include delicious California strawberries in a healthy diabetes-friendly diet.

1. Post-Workout Snack. After a workout, many people eat a large snack that will negate the positive calorie burning effects of their exercise. Instead of indulging in a high calorie snack, have a fresh serving of sweet-tasting California strawberries.

2. Make your own fruity sauce! Put fresh California strawberries (stems removed) in the microwave with a small amount of water for about 60 seconds to create a delicious sauce that can be added to breakfast items, plain Greek yogurt, and more!

3. Create a strawberry salad. Add fruit to your salad by tossing a few sliced strawberries on a spinach salad with grilled chicken and a few nuts to create a delicious meal. Use balsamic vinegar as your dressing.

4. Use frozen strawberries to create a dessert. Blending frozen strawberries will make a Skinny Strawberry Sorbet.

5. Try a new strawberry recipe. Check out all of these diabetes-friendly recipes and make one that sounds good to you!
