The holidays can be an extremely busy and stressful time! Here are some tips to manage and avoid stress traps and pitfalls.

1. Remain positive and try to see the bigger picture. Whether you are in a disagreement with a friend or relative, or simply at a crossroads with a tough decision, maintaining perspective on the situation will help you to manage stress and minimize angst. The more positive about the situation you can be, the better. For example, if you are sitting in traffic, instead of becoming anxious, take some deep breaths, meditate for a few moments, and see it as an opportunity to work on your patient self. Smile and look for the silver lining.

2. Ask for help. During stressful times like the holiday season the case more often than not is that people are willing to extend a hand to a friend in need. Rather than viewing this as a negative thing, try to see the positives. Make it an opportunity to catch up with a friend while you check off your gift list for coworkers or in-laws. Take the opportunity to spend time with family if they offer to help your plan or prepare for a party or get together. Be helpful to those around you to contribute to the generosity and spirit of the season.

3. Be responsible for your own feelings. Know that circumstances may not change, but your attitude and your reaction to the situation is always malleable. Look at problems as challenges, and find creative solutions. Avoid negative people that drag you down. When you feel overwhelmed, sad, or frustrated, look for the inner cause of those feelings, know that this too shall pass, and move on. Allow yourself to be upset only for a moment, and then consciously work to change your mind to a more positive outlook. You will be amazed by how well this technique works as you continue to practice it.

Stay merry this holiday season!

  1. It is strange how going away can be quite a stressful time. The last thing people want to do is spoil the holiday be freaking out just before leaving the house to go away on an expensive trip for a couple of weeks.
