3 Easy Ways to Reduce Anxiety

When summer is just around the corner, the last thing I need to feel is anxious. Do you ever have that feeling of unease about something you just can’t put your finger on? Whether it’s too much thinking ahead or a mile-long to-do list, it’s distracting! Here are my top three tips for going from anxious and jittery to relaxed and at peace (at least for now!):

1. Get Disconnected

Make time every day to turn off your cell phone and computer and be completely present for your friends and family. Today we are connected 24/7 which makes it even more important to schedule some time away from technology.

2. Gratitude

Sometimes we can get caught up in things that really aren’t important and waste countless energy every day worrying. Instead of worrying about what someone else thinks or creating stories in your head of everything that is wrong in your life, focus your energy in a positive way with an attitude of gratitude. Spend time every day thinking about 5 things that you are grateful for and you will find you will develop a more positive mindset. I also keep a gratitude journal which allows me to quickly review all of the blessings in my life.

3. Stay in the Moment

We all hear this all the time and it makes sense…so, how exactly does one practice living in the moment? By not sweating the small stuff! This kind of Zen mentality is an ongoing practice for me, and I’ve conceded that it may always conflict with worldly concerns! Pick fun and relaxing moments, such as a conversation with a good friend or a walk with your dog, and don’t let your mind wander. Just listen to what your friend has to say, or enjoy watching your puppy play in the grass. Eventually, focusing completely on not-so-fun tasks (like waiting in long line at the bank or meeting a tight work deadline) will become easier.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on getting rid of niggling feelings of anxiety! What do you do that helps set your mind at ease?
