5 Ways to Jumpstart Your Morning

[1]I’m a big proponent of the power of a routine.  The reliable order of the tried and true is calming amidst everyday chaos and the unpredictable. A morning routine is just what I need to get going strong on my way to a healthy and productive day. Here’s my top 5 essentials for my morning routine:

1. Prepare Beforehand
I spend about 10 to 15 minutes the night before getting ready for the next day’s tasks. I know I’ll be more relaxed, clearheaded, and productive when I can wake-up and already have my plan for the day. Clothes and accessories for the day’s appointments: check. To-do list of top tasks to accomplish: check. Car keys and purse in plain sight: check!

2. Set Your Intention/Greet the day
In yoga, one is instructed to set an intention for their practice. Whether it’s summing up one or two big tasks I want to accomplish and focus on (based on the to-do list I’ve already compiled the night before), or selecting an overarching theme for the day (such as “calmness” or “contentment”), I’m letting the universe know what I want to attract…and the universe always comes through!

3. Gratitude
What are you grateful for? It’s easy to overlook the many things we have to be grateful for and to focus all of your energy on what you want to accomplish. I find that spending a little time every day to count my many blessings allows me to live my life with more energy, contentment and a higher level of gratitude. Aim to write in a gratitude journal each day at least 5 things that you are grateful for in your life. Do this for one year and you will be amazed by your list!

4. Meditation
Whether you pray to a higher power or simply need time to gather your thoughts, at least 10 minutes of quiet time is essential in the morning. Sit down, curl up with your blanket, and allow your thoughts to settle before the chatter of the day creeps in, as it eventually will. I try not to plan or problem-solve at all during this time—just bask in the silence and joy of the present moment. Looking forward to more spring-like weather when I can do this outside.

5. Energize
Last but not least, I finish getting ready for my day with my favorite oatmeal and a drink to energize me. No, I’m not talking about Starbucks or Red Bull! I love a cup of green tea in the morning and a tall glass of water. Natural energizers are much more likely to fuel me up for a long and productive day ahead.

How do you get ready for the day? What’s absolutely essential in your morning routine?
