When you think of hemp, any number of associations may pop into your mind. Is protein one of them? Well, it should be, and not only that, it should be at the top of your list! Available in many products such as hemp milk, cereal, oil, frozen waffles, and protein powder, hemp is also being called one of the best plant-based protein sources, and for good reason!

Hemp seeds are nutritionally akin to flaxseeds, but the taste is more like sunflower seeds. Their composition is 44% oil, followed by 33% protein and 12% fiber. Most seeds contain omega 6 fatty acids but omega 3 fatty acids are rare. Hemp seeds really are unique among the nuts and seeds family in their composition of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids, which is recommended in a ratio of 4:1. Currently, the typical American eats these omega fatty acids in a ratio of 10:1. A more balanced consumption of these omega fatty acids can reduce risk for atherosclerosis, certain cancers, and other health problems.BIt is easily digestible and offers an impressive amino acid profile similar to complete animal sources of protein. Available in a variety of flavors, just 2 tablespoons typically boast 11g of protein and (bonus) 14g of fiber – that’s about half of your daily fiber needs! Add it to smoothies, oatmeal, pancake batter – it couldn’t be easier! The flavor is mild and delightfully nutty, and the texture isn’t chalky like some other protein powders.

With hemp, you really have nothing to lose. Here are a few of my favorites to add to your shopping list:

  • Living Harvest Hemp Milk (available in original, chocolate, and vanilla, unsweetened orginal, unsweetened vanilla!)
  • Living Harvest Tempt Ice Cream
  • French Meadow Hemp Tortillas
  • Organic Hemp Protein Powder

The All-Pro Diet Book includes over 13 smoothie recipes with hemp protein powder.

What’s your favorite recipe to add hemp protein powder to?

  1. Hemp is even way better than soy. Unlike soy, hemp is not genetically modified, and it doesn’t contain the anti-nutritional qualities commonly found in soy. Plus it is rich in iron and vitamin E as well as omega-3 and GLA.

  2. Hemp Protein is one of the latest discoveries in the plant world. Drinking Hemp Milk or adding Hemp Protein Powder to your smoothie is a great alternative to animal and even soy products. Hemp contains some of the highest globular proteins found in the plant kingdom.
